IF Mode

Designed by Pacific Cycles and Mark Sanders (of Strida fame), this was one of the most fascinating bikes of the show. The unique folding mechanism was captivating, and I couldn't stop playing with it. It seems like magic, but its really just clever linkages. Check out youtube videos to see what I mean. This bike is now in production, and for sale.

Gruber Assist

Some quite innovative thinking here. It is an electric assist motor that installs in the bottom of a 31.6mm standard-sized seat tube. The drive bevel gear at the bottom of the motor mates to a bevel gear on the bottombracket spindle, and the controller is placed above the motor (battery is stored in a seat bag). Push the power button and off you go! (just make sure to keep your legs moving, or you'll resist the motor) I didn't see any hint of a torque sensor, so this may not be as user friendly as the current electric-assist systems.

We are finally starting to see electric bikes that are designed with their purpose in mind, and not just trying to "add-on" a battery, controller and motor to a traditional bike. This one was fun to ride, and the battery and controller compartment are quite tidy.

Shaft drive

This bevel gear is from a shaft drive bike. You can see how tricky the design of these teeth is. The shaft drive system on bikes in general has been plagued by fast wear, poor efficiency and looseness. Hopefully someone perfects it one day, because it is such a tidy and clean solution - no grease on your pants or hands.

Schindelhauer

Here we see the dropout from the bike in the previous picture. To use a belt drive on a traditional frame, the rear triangle has to break somewhere to let the belt in (since you can't break a belt like you can with a chain). This was the most beautiful solution I saw. The toothed metal piece at the bottom of the triangle, which looks like the belt teeth, comes out when a vertical bolt is removed from below. So clean. So beautiful.
