Graffiti Markup Language (.gml)

Arte, tecnologia, universidades e fachadas

Wall Writing Weekend

Once again, Casom organized a graffiti session here in Delft. Together with JAC, ENZ, Sike 2 and Stefan, we spent the whole Saturday afternoon writing. It was really nice to see Stefan writing for the first time with Spray cans, I am use to see his amazing design sketches at work and was sure he would adapt quickly. Good times!

Thanks to Casom and ENZ, I finally got a chance to do graffiti for the first time. They invited me for a day spraying at a legal wall here in Delft. The sun was shining like it was Rio, and inspite of the cold dutch wind, the wall was filled with paint by the end of the day.

An object without a proper name, yet.

Untitled Art work, 2005 - Henrique Mattar Monnerat
Choosing a name for an art object can be quite challenging actually. Maybe that’s the reason for so many “untitled” art works out there, it can be also that many artists who name their artworks Untitled just don’t give a F@&k about names after all. I didn’t think too much about it until I had to name an object I created, and I give a F@&k actually, and that’s what this story is about, theorizing about the names and not names of objects. At the end, I leave you with the challenge to help me out, with the art piece above.

Although I am positive that the name of an art work doesn’t make it an better art piece, I do think it’s important. Picture yourself, wondering through a contemporary art gallery, imagine you know nothing about formal Art (at least you didn’t study it), you stand in front of what seems to be a group of 8 randomly displayed, white “marshmalowish” balls sitting on a room filled with sand. You are in front of the a contemporary art installation, and you think: what the Hell? next, puzzled, you go to the name plate and it says: Untitled, 1998 Mr. Artist – Rocks; sand and marshmallow. what the F@&k! you almost feel like screaming. Houston we have a problem. Yep, I have been there too my dear reader! The name was the only clue to bring some understanding to the object without post graduating in the history of arts. People get angry, many feel very bad. What a sad story, at least in my opinion.

In order to fight for the democratization of art we have to fight for more satisfied art consumers, I am starting today a movement against Untitled artworks, for the sake of the mere mortals who don’t have a degree in Art but who just want to have a go in understanting the story being told by the artist, on the fly, on the spot. How we are going to do this? No, please, lets not come up with sticker tags, or barcodes…that after you scaning it with your iphone, link to the wikipedia article of that art work. Lets give this artists some homework to do! send them letters! require some explanation =) they will like it.

I didn’t do my homework I have to confess, ’cause the art object up there still features the Untitled flag. Well, ok, at least I am here, writing about it.

But the problem of my Untitled art object is still not solved.

Here is what I propose:

I tell you what motivated me to build the object above, what I want to say with it. I will tell you the names I already came up with but ain’t entirely satisfied with and if then, you feel like participating…still…you shout a name you think the art piece should have.

Deal?

Visuals of the World – Got something to express?

Lets Evo has been lately a great fan of “collaborative mass we are smarter than me” kinda of stuff. Here is something to inspire and to be inspired from. Visuals of The world is a real-time growing collection of user generated visual/ideas in form of a website. The programing of the Visualsoftheworld website is exactly the kind of programming that I need for the scan heads collaborative art project, if you can do this kind of site, send me an email, we could collaborate. Click on, peace.

I just could not not participate….

SIGG Bottle Design Contest

A just posted my entry at the Sigg Design Contest. All you creative junkies should do the same. Simply download the template and let it be. The winning design will be produced and a portion of the sales (I hope not 0,00001 %) will be given to the Surfrider Foundation which is committed since years in protecting the ocean life.

My Siggstyle

This is my concept. It came from a photo I took in 2003 when I first got in Germany. As a Brazilian, I was amazed by the aesthetic of trees during the hard winter when all the leafs fall. The “greener” look of the naked branches was my way of illustrating the life that resists in them during the cold.

Everyone with a scanner or a near copy machine can participate. Just hit the scan button and let the artist inside of you do the rest. All your art pieces can be uploaded in a snap and shared for everyone to see.

If you haven’t already found the contemporary artist YOU, here is a chance to start.

Algorithim meets BMX feat. Jochen Leinberger

Jochen Meets Lets Evo

I got a chance to be modified in an experiment made by my friend Jochen Leinberger, who wrote a small program that reads each pixel of and image and transforms it into a geometry shape (in this case, a sphere) and scales it in coorelation to its color value. Its similar of what a photoshop filter does, the diference is that his program can generate a vector graphic file (.SVG) of the result which can than be endlessly scaled and even be sent to a CNC mill Machine.

Jochen is experimenting with scientific phenomens, digital processes and aestetics questioning the frontiers of algorithims and the real world.

And I am trying to convince him to create some algorithim skateboard graphics. Until that happens, I suggest everyone interested to keep track of his thoughts on his website Explorative Environments

Lets Change this World before it changes us

Illustration

I did this illustration after listening to a really good album from the producer and MC Iky Castilho from my home town Rio. Iky´x Tape Vol 1 is an awesome example of rio´s rap scene featuring DJ Babao and various MCs. The album is complete downloadable at the website.

“I am going to chage the world before the world changes me” ( Iky – Eu vou mudar o Mundo)

Thanks Chico for lending me this amazing Tape. Lets Evo Recommends

Art Attack

Panamarenko

As my friend Jochen Leinberger came back from Belgium and showed me the work of Panamarenko I felt I had to share with you. Panamarenko is an artist, a dreamer, his art pieces resemble fantastic voyages from our dreams as childs.

His maschinelike sculptures bring back the romantism that technology took away from us.

Works like his are able to take my mind back to places It has´t even been before.

Check his work, build your dreams, send a picture.

Jochen, thanks for sharing.

A piece of Bicycle Art

As I was riding my bike at the Mountains close to Frankfurt I had a chance to see this amazing bike made completely Wood.

The maker of this piece of Art is the Engineer Reinhold Eichhorn who works at Braun electronics. He did the whole work buy hand at his home workshop. And you could tell that his is not playing by taking a closer look at the saddle, It hiddenly screams “No pain no game”.

We are trying to convince him to show some of his building technics used on this bike.
